We
want to teach people what they don't know, not what
they already know. We also know that everyone's knowledge
is different. So why is it that we attempt to teach
everyone in exactly the same way?
Praxis believes that a good teacher should start by
asking the learner questions, until they build a map
of what the learner already knows.
Teaching should then concentrate on what the learner
doesn't know. In this way we can develop a strategic
approach to teaching instead of the current "shotgun"
method. Through the use of artificial intelligence
techniques, and Bayesian Statistics, computers can
make these maps and develop teaching strategies.
At Praxis we are developing a way to use Bayesian
Belief Networks to interactively map a learner's knowledge.
As questions are answered, the map improves. Soon
we can estimate probabilities of related knowledge
in different areas. Then we can begin by teaching
the low probability areas that have the biggest over-all
influence on the learning map.Concentrating on teaching
people what they don't know saves time and money.
More importantly, it prevents boredom.
